Governor: Free Republic
Sink pirates. Found colonies.
One frigate, a charter, and a sea full of pirates. Found settlements, raise a fleet, sink the raiders and bank their plunder, for as long as your term holds.
Out now
For iPhone and iPad. No ads, no purchases, no accounts, nothing collected.
How it plays
You are the Governor. The Republic handed you a charter, one frigate, and a stretch of open water.
Drag a course, lock on a target
Tap a ship and drag its course. Tap a pirate to lock on. Idle ships engage anything that comes near, so a patrol left in the right place is worth a hundred taps later.
Settle islands that suit the build
Colony ships carry settlers to empty islands. Every island has a character (fertile, forested, pastoral, quarry) and takes only the buildings that suit it.
Thirteen classes, escalating
Pirates come wave by wave. Five named flagships sail under captains out of the history books, each carrying a bounty worth the risk, and in deep water, a kraken that hunts pirate and Republic alike.
Draft your term before you sail
Boons cost points and burdens pay for them. Take Veteran Crews and Long Guns, and answer for it with Crown Tariffs and Wanted Posters. Every run is a different bargain.
A look at it
Every ship, island and icon is pixel art, generated on the device as the game runs.

What’s inside
- One player, on your device. No internet connection needed, ever.
- Threat climbs with your treasury, your fleet and the clock. Ports are struck, captured, and taken back again.
- Islands generate fresh every term, so no two charters look alike.
- Autosaves every twenty seconds. Put it down mid-broadside.
Drawn in code
No art files. No sound files. The game draws and plays itself.
Every ship, island, building and icon is pixel art generated on the device at runtime, down to the app icon. So is the audio: the cannon fire, the bosun’s whistle, the sea and the shanty are synthesised as the game runs, with no sound files shipped at all.
Privacy
It doesn’t collect anything, because there’s nowhere for it to send anything.
The game has no networking code in it at all: no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, no third-party SDKs. Read the full privacy policy.
Good for
Anyone who has ever looked at a map and wanted to put a fort on it.
The water does not care that you were appointed.
